Setting Intent Thresholds Correctly

A practical framework for quality floors.

Intent thresholds determine the trade-off between volume and conversion density. Set them too high and you may starve the system of sufficient data and scale. Set them too low and you reintroduce the low-quality traffic the platform is designed to exclude. The correct setting is the one that maximizes profit for your specific unit economics, not a universal default.

Begin with a moderate threshold and allow at least one full weekly cycle of data to accumulate. Examine conversion rate by quality band, EPC, and residual contribution. If the highest-quality band dramatically outperforms and you have margin to expand volume, consider a slight reduction in threshold. If lower bands drag overall performance, raise the floor.

Avoid frequent large adjustments. Models need stable conditions to learn. Treat threshold changes as experiments with clear hypotheses and measurement windows. Over time you will develop an intuition for the settings that work in your vertical, but the data should always lead.
